Historic organ
UNTIL RECENTLY, the pipe organ at St. John's was a dust-laden antique. Termites were attacking the highly-structured woodwork; the leather bellows lay exposed, the keys were jammed and so were the pedals wedged out of motion.
The pipe organ is a rare instrument, with two manuals and a pedal-board. There are 10 ranks of pipes arranged in 12 registers with a total of 590 pipes in the entire organ. The brass plaque on the organ console states, - "This organ was erected by voluntary subscription in the year 1908 - W.A.H. Parker - Chaplain."
Thanks to T. K. Das of M/s Hurry Brothers (a reputed Kolkata-based firm responsible for assembling church pipe organs) and his team a legacy was restored. It required a painstaking month's labour to reinstate the very cornerstone of St. John's Church.
Of course, Commodore T.M.G. Champion and N.S.J. Devadathanam's efforts, coupled with a zillion prayers from all devotees need a special mention for the entire cause of restoring the organ back to life.
