The enforcers

ANEW breed of tough enforcers in police or military uniform has taken over Indian cinema. In the last four months, 14 films in various languages _"Saamy", "Kaakha Kaakha" and "Bheeshmar" in Tamil, "Pattalam" in Malayalam, "Seetaiah" in Telugu and "Gangaajal" and this week's "Zameen" in Hindi _ have eulogised the men in khaki and military green. The single point agenda of these men seems to be to save society from the lumpen elements or country from imminent terrorist attacks. Said Ajay Devgan: "In "Gangaajal", the superintendent of police that I play was more life-like than any other cop film seen before, while in "Zameen" I play the role of an Army intelligence officer who negotiates with terrorists after they hijack a plane." Devgan as a rule insists that the characters he plays in such police stories do not sing songs. More such stories are in the pipeline with Ajit and Nagarjuna playing cops in their forthcoming films "Anjaneya" and "Shivamani 98480 22338" respectively.
