THAT BANGALORE has a large appetite for chat and masala dosas is believable. But who would believe the city consumes gold jewellery with the same gusto?
It's true, say the organisers of Jewels of India, the jewellery retail exhibition-sale. Which is why the glitter show is back for the fifth year. From September 26 to 29, the Kanteerava Indoor Stadium will dazzle as the country's best jewellers showcase their wares. What's `in' will be there. And so will some work-a-day stuff from `out' (read foreign stuff). The fare that includes platinum, diamonds, pure gold, and two-gm. gold will suit a all budgets and occasions.
South Indians buy 40 to 45 per cent of the gold consumed in India. Cosmopolitan Bangalore has become the hottest choice in the South for such a grand sale as "only here will people pick up a piece of jewellery at an exhibition", says Sandeep Bekal, Expoworld. In places such as Chennai, people are bound to their traditional jewellers.
The exhibition saw over 50,000 visitors last year and more than 60,000 are expected this time. Of the jewellery worth Rs. 50 crore displayed last year, Rs. 24 crore worth was sold in five days. No wonder the list of participants in the exhibition is also increasing.
"As Dasara and Diwali are almost here, this is an auspicious time to shop for gold. Most of the leaders in this market will be displaying their work," says Mr. Bekal. The highlight of this year will be the participation of Tribhuvandas Bhimji Zaveri from Mumbai. Then there will be exquisite handcrafted Meenakari and Kundan jewellery from the 400-year-old tradition of the Bhuraman Rajmal Surana family, Jaipur. There will also be jewellery from Japan, Bangkok, Germany.
The best of handmade and machine-made jewellery will be available at the show. "Original South Sea pearls will be showcased by Star Jewellers and S. Jitendra's from Mumbai," adds one of the organisers. "The white pearls that people mostly use are created artificially and what is formed naturally is grey and lustrous. The only two dealers for these pearls in India will be in this exhibition."
"Considering the value of the exhibits, high security has been arranged. Even the help of the local police has been sought," added the organisers.
