The melody factor
Ram Gopal Varma: unconventional film-maker.
INDIAN FILMS are known to thrive on songs. An array of mellifluous numbers has even scored over average screenplays. While the music-and-dance sequences set our films apart from those of other countries, they also prove to be a bane at international competitions. But hold on... there's this new Bollywood genre. Horror and song-less sagas are concurrently holding sway. Spearheading the move was Ram Gopal Varma's run-away success Bhoot. Ek Hasina Thi and Ab Tak Chappan followed. But in Darna Mana Hai, Hawa, and Teen Deewarein, the fear factor hardly had an impact despite the lack of song-breaks.
Surprisingly, even Sanjay Leela Bhansali, known for his ostentatious song-and-dance routines, has followed suit with Black. So is suspense the new formula to success?
