Spinning yarn

Macramé, the art of decorative knotting, is enjoying a revival.

Macramé and related techniques of surface design have carved a niche for themselves in the world of fashion.

Macramé, employing the technique of knotting pliable lengths of yarns, starts its journey from the Palaeolithic times, when man first felt the need to bind two objects together. Once the beauty of knots was recognised, a new art form emerged.

A knot conjures up a multitude of ideas and thoughts. The technique of macramé does not exceed beyond variation of two knots, the permutations and combinations of which have proven endless.

These magical combinations lend themselves to a vast array of two-dimensional and three-dimensional designs. This `knotty splendour' caught the fancy of fashion connoisseurs. The `handcrafted look' continues to sail strong in apparel and fashion accessories. Open mesh structure clothing can be achieved by the delicate yarn craft technique of macramé.

Elementary knots and pattern knots create a porous web, ideal for this season. Silhouette ideas such as tank tops, spaghetti blouses, boxy fit tops, twin sets, full circle and half circle skirts, boleros, bandannas and stoles are in. Conventional knotting materials such as jute, cotton, linen, rayon, wool, silk and leather have different knot definitions and lend a plenitude of surface qualities. Different yarns and exploration of newer techniques propel innovative use of material ranging from packaging strips and stretch rayons to strips of polythene bags.

The technique of macramé is used in the ethnic segment as well.

Stock your wardrobe within macramé accessories this season. Belts and bags (tote, drawstring concepts) in macramé top the style charts. You know that it is time for florals. Sink into `flora', whether it is the petal knot pattern or surface embellishment.

Shine and shimmer gives a new face to this craft. Beads or sequins are the right elements give a delicate look to the garment. Lurex incorporations are seen in the `glowing' narration of ensembles.

Along with the ethereal white and the all-time favourite black, other hues also comprise the colour palette.

Today, macramé is enjoying a revival.

Attempts all over the globe result in works that set themselves apart from stereotypes.
