For humanity

DANIEL PEARL, the journalist who was killed last year in Pakistan was a talented violinist, fiddler and mandolin player. He used his passion for music to form friendships across cultural and verbal divides. In every town, in every country, in which he lived he joined a band, orchestra or chamber group.

In the spirit of Pearl's love of music and commitment to dialogue, the Daniel Foundation launched Daniel Pearl Music Day in 2002 uniting music lovers in over 100 concerts in 18 countries. The first Annual Daniel Pearl Music Day was a resounding success linking individuals and organizations of all types ranging from small bands of amateur musicians to symphony orchestras, using the power of music to promote tolerance and inspire respect for differences. This year, concerts, shows and musical programs are being held between October 7 and 19. Musicians, artists and performers around the world, musical groups large and small, professional and amateur, schools and radio stations, are invited to play in "Harmony for Humanity." Participation in Music Day involves no financial obligation. It requires only that a dedication to the ideals of tolerance and humanity be made.
