Party... like a Pasha

Want to unwind in style? Check out Pasha, at The Park, says SHALINI UMACHANDRAN

AN INTREPID Chettinad traveller wandered across the continents — he travelled to the Middle East, Morocco, Turkey, Egypt and the Far East, — and was floored by the opulence and grandeur of what he saw.

He decided to share the experience of his travels with the rest of the not-so-fortunate in the country. And that be the origin of the idea for Pasha, The Park Hotel's newest nightspot, according to V.V. Giri, general manager, The Park.

From the outside, it looks rather like a black box with a formidable steel door. The fortress-like look gives way to a glittering coloured floor, which the hotel staff say is custom-made with bits of coloured glass bangles embedded to trap and reflect light.

Wood and glass doors on the left, set with gorgeous Tanjore paintings lead to a courtyard that is just right for barbeques or private parties.

Past another impressive black door and one can really get into the business of lounging — and with silken cushions, filmy drapes and mother-of-pearl tables lounging here is serious work. Comfy divans with soft cushions in green, fuchsia, silver and red with shiny flecks of silk, mirrors, tassels and sequins line the edges, making one feel like a Turkish Pasha minus the headgear and hundred servants. Fat candles warm the corners and the oversize mirrors on the walls reflect the rest of the bar's activities.

The comfortably ostentatious but traditional corners look out on to completely contemporary floor and lighting. The bar, on the left, is plain black with lines of asymmetrically assembled lights. The base of the DJs console and the bar, set with blue lights and the illuminated floor that seems to drop a few levels, give the place a clubby look.

Though all the action is on the ground floor, complete with DJ playing house music, hip-hop, trance and rock, the vantage point is the upper level. A pavilion with the same kind of snug but elaborate décor, it looks down on to the many-coloured floor and the crowd, which has to share space with the DJ and the bartenders.

The blend of luxury, relaxation and entertainment is based entirely on design, says Giri. The Park, Chennai, is a member of the Design Hotels Inc., which brands and markets a group of design-oriented city hotels and resorts. Each of these hotels is known for its unusual and creative interior design, architecture and impeccable service, says Giri.

The Pasha has been designed by Hirsch Bedner Associates, Los Angeles, who did the rest of The Park. Pasha, like the rest of The Park Hotel, distinguishes itself with innovative interiors and attention to creative detail.

The huge mirrors make the place look larger than it really is and the lights, music, sound systems and the kinds of fabrics and colours used make the place a luxurious after-dinner hang-out, with a combination of cocktails to help one relax.
