An exhibition of terracotta diyas at C.P. Art Centre from tomorrow will showcase the inventive flair of artisans
|
They are traditional, yet have a contemporary appeal. The 1,100 terracotta lamps created by Balamurali of the Heritage Art Gallery, Anna Nagar, for Diwali are exclusive. These, along with Tanjore paintings, hanging brass lamps and other artefacts, will be showcased at "Heritage Lamp Utsav", an exhibition-cum-sale from October 17-22 at the C.P. Art Centre.
The range of diyas comes in earth hues green, blue, orange, golden yellow and brown. Each lamp is adorned with an idol of a god or goddess, be it Lord Ganesha or Lord Nataraja or Goddess Durga. While some lamps have a glossy look, others have been given a matte finish.
The plate-like base has an idol with intricately worked agal stands around it. Each lamp has special agals, which can be lighted during special occasions. Thus, the pieces last longer. The base is coated with imported waterproof paint and can be filled with water and perhaps flower petals even as the diyas are lighted.
Some designs are one of a kind such as the Nataraja where a nandi sits pretty in the middle of the plate, Lord Vishnu and his Dasavataram, Ashta Anjaneya, Ashtalakshmi and five Ganeshas playing musical instruments. The one with Goddess Durga, who is flanked by elephants, has minute details.
As for the prices, they range from Rs. 35 to Rs. 3,000. The agals cost Rs. 7.
The exhibition is on between 9.30 a.m. and 9 p.m. at the C.P. Art Centre Mini hall, No. 1, Eldams Road, Alwarpet.
