It happens with Arshad
ONLY RECENTLY when Arshad Warsi was watching a choreographer's group from Latin America performing on television, his wilted spirit was as if electrified. "Oh Lord, I can do it too. What am I doing here?" he questioned himself. The confession comes in a moment of nostalgic recollection of his dance days in 1991, when he was known as number four among the world's top dancers.
"I could have resumed the dance classes I used to give. But I had already stepped into films and hardly had time to devote to my students, and they would feel cheated as they used to come to learn from me only, not my pupils," the 35-year-old actor reveals. He is at "Ssteel" the bar-cum-restaurant at Ashok Hotel in New Delhi for the music release of his forthcoming film "Waisa Bhi Hota Hai (WBHH), Part II." In which he plays Puneet, the fun-loving copywriter who wants to remain anonymous.
"You know what? The truth is, choreographers are not paid justly. Barring a few who make a name, their condition is actually bad. Even good groups die a natural death for lack of funds. I can resume my career in it, but from where will I feed the group of 30 members of my team?" It is a valid question that still haunts him. "I will someday fulfil my dream," his optimism shows.
This student of Dev Lal School at Nasik who lost interest in studies after high school, did some salesmanship, tried his hand at advertising, and finally zeroed in on films when Joy Augustine saw his pictures and dancing and offered him "Tere Mere Sapne".
"I never wanted to, but he forced me to send some of my pictures. I sent some stupid pictures yet got selected," he recalls. Then came obscure films like "Hero Hindustani" and "Trishakti" which led him nowhere. "After Tere Mere Sapne" everyone wanted me to do the same role, but I refused. I might have committed a mistake by Bollywood standards, but the creative satisfaction was always there," he says, and claims to be contented with this new film, WBHH-Part II too.
"Munna Bhai M.B.B.S" and "Zamanat" with Karisma and Amitabh Bachchan are his next films.
The cast matters! "No, be it any big star opposite me, I don't get overawed or impressed," he declares.
Impressed with his career graph?
"Financially, yes. I have a good house, a car, a lovely wife and three dogs. I feel satisfied, for I love to live a simple life. I crave no more, but professionally, I deserve better roles. My potential is still not tapped," he comes forth honestly.
