For extra sheen

Try these simple home-made conditioners that give your hair a silky sheen.

DULL, LIFELESS hair is the result of frequent perming, colouring and rough handling. Conditioners help in retaining the natural moisture balance, replenishing the hair and putting the sheen back.
Here are some conditioners, simple and effective, that can be made from products off the kitchen shelves to add that gloss to your crowning glory.
For dry hair: Did you say your hair looks dry, lacks lustre and is difficult to manage? "Apply a banana nourishing pack," says beautician Laila Kakade. "Mash two ripe bananas. Add half cup beaten curd. Apply this paste on the scalp and hair strands. Leave it on for 15 minutes and shampoo. Mayonnaise is excellent for hair. Heat half a cup of mayonnaise and apply to dry unwashed hair. Leave it on for half an hour. Rinse and shampoo."
Combat split ends: Split ends occur when the cuticle is damaged owing to factors such as excessive perming, colouring, or excessive usage of heat styling. It can make the hair brittle and dry. The hair shaft tangles easily and may split at the end or anywhere along the length. Apart from off-the-shelf standard conditioners and serums available in the market you can make your own anti-split ends conditioner. "Take half a cup of yoghurt. Add a tablespoon of pure honey. Mix well. Apply on the scalp and hair shaft. Rinse with lukewarm water after 20 minutes. Apply this pack after shampoo," says Laila.
Conditioning for oily hair: If dry hair is a cause of worry, so is an oily scalp. Oily hair tends to become sticky and unmanageable within hours. In case of combination hair, the hair is greasy at the roots but remains dry at the shaft and sometimes splits at the ends.
"Baking soda rinse works well on an oily scalp. Take a tablespoon of baking soda. Add four tablespoons of cider vinegar. Apply on the scalp. Leave it for five-seven minutes and shampoo."
"Another popular option is the lime and vinegar rinse. Take a cup of warm water and add three tablespoons of vinegar along with the juice of one lemon. Gently massage this mixture into hair and scalp. Leave for 15 minutes and rinse with water," says Laila.
Shimmer with saffron: "Saffron gives hair an immediate sheen. Boil saffron strands in water. Cool it. Add lemon juice and honey. Rub into the scalp and hair strands. Leave it on for 15 minutes. Rinse with water," says Laila.
Conditioning schedule: "You can begin the regular hair-conditioning routine with hot oil conditioning that is ideal for all hair types. Heat any vegetable oil - coconut or olive, till slightly warm. Massage into the scalp and apply slightly on the hair shaft. Dip a clean towel in hot water. Squeeze dry and wrap it around the hair. Repeat three to four times. Shampoo and rinse. Ensure that you apply oil about an hour before you shampoo. Follow up with the pre or post-shampoo conditioning according to the hair type. Hair conditioning can be done thrice a week for good results," says Laila.
