GOA IS home to Remo Fernandes and Abbey (of Aye Sanam fame). In fact, it was Goa's infectious folk tunes (remember Maya Ya and Maria Pitache) that inspired the two singers to compose some of the tracks that catapulted them to fame. Yet another artiste from Goa is all set to make waves in the Indipop scene.
Goan-born Oliver Sean (is of Italian and Portugese-Goan descent), the new sensation, sings rock, blues and country music. Oliver began singing at the age of four, strumming the guitar at the age of eight, and writing lyrics at the age of 11.
Oliver attributes his inclination towards music to his late uncle, Victor Alvares, the legendary bass guitarist in Remo Fernandes' band, `The Microwave Pappadums'. It was Victor who introduced Oliver to the various facets of music.
During his late teens, Oliver sang for bands such as `Knights', `India' and `Cloud 9'. He later joined the Recording Institute of Technology (part of the Musicians Institute of California), where he acquired an idea about the technical aspects of composing and mixing music. He also performed at the prestigious Mick Jagger Centre (a platform for young musical talent), and travelled across the U.K. and India. Oliver owns two recording studios - one in Goa, and the other in Dubai.
His debut album, `I Like It' (Times Music; CD: Rs. 195), has just hit the music stores. Oliver has written, arranged and composed all the tracks in the solo album. Apart from singing, Oliver also plays the keyboards and guitars. The `Oliver Sean Band' comprises Assumption Nunes on percussion, Vency Dias on bass guitar, and Prakash Naik on tabla and Indian percussion.
The music is a concoction of rock, blues and country. Prior to the release of the album, the band performed at beach concerts in Goa, and earned a huge fan following.
The band members believe in creating their own music, and do not wish to undermine themselves by singing cover versions of popular songs. The lyrics of I Like It speak about love and a happy life.
The title track is rendered in typical rock style. But the moment the sound of the tabla is introduced, the song takes a different turn. Tonite, on the other hand, reflects a blues groove set to some impressive guitar strains. Turn Around is a peppy track. Of the tracks featured in the album, Nicole, is more soothing and has the feel of a ballad to it.
The song, You and Me, appears in two versions: one, a soft track, and the other, a groovy one. On the whole, Oliver's vocals are good, and the Indian percussion leaves a lasting impression on the listener.
Oodles of attitude, energy and imagination- that's Oliver's music for you.
