Lighting up other lives

Celebrities all, but quietly trying to make a difference

FESTIVITY, CELEBRATION, cheer and happiness all around... this is the spirit of Diwali. This is one festival where everyone tries to go all out to rejoice and have fun. However, in this land of teeming millions there are homes which are untouched by celebrations.

Besides the gifts to friends and relatives, the celebs and innumerable others contribute in their own way to bring about joy in the lives of the underprivileged and downtrodden.

Actor Shriya has been giving donations to the Blind School in Delhi every Diwali. "This is something I have been doing even before I started earning." Suresh Oberoi who does his charitable activities silently will be sponsoring the education of two students. "I will be distributing gift hampers and spending time with cancer patients of Tata Memorial Hospital too," he says. While son Vivek Oberoi will be educating an engineering student and campaigning against loud crackers to reduce noise pollution.

For many people charity and social work goes on round the year. They do not wait for just Diwali to do their bit. Subash Ghai, Madhur Bhandarkar and Raveena Tandon have been helping the needy. "I have been actively involved with CRY (Child Relief and You)," says Raveena. If you are harbouring thoughts about helping the needy start this Diwali.
