Insights into heritage
R T. CHARI AND R. V. Gopalan of the TAG Group and Ramu Endowments have a mission... revive interest in South India's cultural heritage. They organise a programme every month (Sunday), which comprises talks by experts, drama presentations, documentary screenings and more, at the Tag Centre, TTK Road. These programmes have succeeded in bringing together people, especially in the 45 plus age group. "The elders need to be well-informed to be able to educate the generations to come," says Chari.
Some of the events organised in the recent times include the staging of Indira Parthasarathy's play "Veedu", screening of documentaries on writers like Ashokamitran and Indira Parthasarathy and quiz programmes. The centre has a library with a collection of 2,000 books on heritage.
Chari feels these days, youngsters study history only for the sake of examinations. So, in order to create an interest in the subject, they are planning to prepare a chronology of events of South Indian history and heritage and distribute it among colleges . Chari has also brought out cassettes on appreciation of Carnatic music, besides developing thematic concepts on music. Those interested in attending these programmes can contact 24672741 /2742.
