IN THE early days of cricket, Englishmen played the game in sylvan surroundings, more for delectation than scoring victories. And this being the climate, alehouses often went with cricket grounds. Bellying up to the ale-laden tables, cricket lovers would watch and comment on an unfolding game between sips from their glasses.
Cricket seems to have come full circle at The Champ Sports Village at Mayajaal, where conditions are present for the aforementioned scenes to repeat themselves. Overlooking a 68-yard cricket ground are two bars (one non-smoking and another smoking) and a multi-cuisine restaurant. Spectators can watch the game even as they take a swig from a beer-mug or tuck into a delicacy.
Cricket is just one part of what the Champ's Sports Village offers. A mini golf course is under preparation, while facilities for playing tennis, squash, badminton, table tennis, snooker and indoor cricket are already in place.
There are also a swimming pool and a health club (gym, jacuzzi, steam room and massage parlour for men and women). A resort with 56 cottages is in the offing.
Professionals from the above-mentioned sports will put the members through their paces. Where the willow game is concerned, former Indian skipper Krishnamachari Srikkanth will be the coach.
There are four membership schemes - family/corporate, couple, single and student. "We want to restrict our membership to 400 people," says S. Shanmugavadivelu, business head, Mayajaal Entertainment Ltd.
The sports village is expected to become fully operational by December.
