No kidding, this!

THE ALLIANCE Francaise of Madras, on behalf of the Books Section of the Embassy of France in India, is hosting a talk by Jacques Binsztok, Director of Seuil Images, one of three major French publishers and representative for children's literature of the Bureau International de l'Edition Francaise.

The talk on "Contemporary Children's Literature in France: A Panoramic View" will be at the Alliance Francaise of Madras on October 29 at 5 p.m. Jerome Neutres, Cultural Attache, Embassy of France in India will also be present to answer queries pertaining to the Books Section of the Embassy.

Jacques Binsztok has been the director of the children's section of Seuil Publications since 1992. A former history and geography teacher, he collaborated with publishing companies and in 1985, started working full-time for an adolescent's collection and subsequently joined Seuil Publications. He says: "Our aim is clear, we want to narrate meaningful stories. We can, I believe, evoke a responsibility to convey certain values. To be more clear, we could be considered being part of the national anti-racism trend."

Binsztok has been able to create a special relationship with various children's writers. "Children's books do not work with best-sellers, we have to target the period. Today, we are there, but we should never be satisfied... There is no basic recipe. We do not ask a reader to read a novel before publishing it. We believe in our books and then, it is up to us to make the book."
