Caring for them
CHILDREN UNDERGOING treatment at the Cancer Institute, Adyar, recently laid the foundation stone for a new multi-level paediatric ward at the Institute.
The project is being promoted by the Mahesh Memorial Trust, which aims at providing a comfortable environment and state-of-the-art facilities for children battling cancer.
The new ward will house a day-care unit for outpatients, an ICU, a dining hall, a playground outside the building and a fully-equipped play area inside, a mother's room and a counselling room for patients and their families.
In February this year, the Mahesh Memorial Trust, a registered non-profit organisation, raised funds through A.R. Rahman's `Unity of Light' concert. Since then, the trust has been supporting the treatment of three children every month at the institute. It has also helped around 10 patients in different capacities.
The trust plans to hold cancer detection camps, special camps for women to screen for cervical cancer and an outreach programme to educate women on cancer and increase awareness about the dreaded disease.
