Unique seminar

Swaralaya and Sahmat bring Sufi music and dance to the city

SWARALAYA AND Sahmat, in association with Media Development Foundation, present "The Making of India", a seminar and exhibition, on November 2, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Asian College of Journalism, Kasturi Centre, 2, Anna Salai. Prof. Aijaz Ahmad, political thinker, N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu, Prof. R. Champakalakshmi, historian, and Sitaram Yechury, member of the CPI-M Politburo, will participate in the seminar.

As part of this theme-based programme, a Sufi music and dance concert will take place at 6 p.m. in the Image Auditorium. Mridangam maestro Umayalpuram Sivaraman will set the pace for the soiree with a recital, which will be followed by a performance by Manganiars. Folk singers of Rajasthan, Manganiars belong to the now almost extinct Jajmani tradition of folk singing from Jaisalmer. Their poetic repertoire "consists of rites of passage, the seasonal cycles, celebration of ecology and the impassioned Sufi verses that cut across political and geographic divisions". Thereafter, the audience will be swept up on a wave of Sufi singing and dancing by a troupe led by Madan Gopal Singh and Navtej Johar. For details call 28418254/55.
