The Hindu-Young World quiz resonated with the spirit of students at the regional finals

THE HINDU-Young World Quiz 2003 for Bangalore school students was a resounding success if the response was anything to go by. Not less than a thousand youngsters roared in anticipation at the Chowdaiah as the quiz began. And when that very amicable and genial pace bowler Javagal Srinath walked in, the excitement only heightened. Amidst all this, Frank Anthony Public School (FAPS) romped home at the ninth regional finals here Tuesday with a cool 95 points, leaving behind five others in the race for the coveted place in the All-India Finals, to be held on November 1 at Hyderabad. Eight other regional finals at Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Vizag, Vijayawada, Delhi, Kochi, and Thiruvananthapuram were completed before the regional final here.

The quiz, which had interesting sections such as Be-Choosy, Anagramania, Gallery, Multimedia Masala, Mera Bharath Mahan, and Topsy Turvy, was conducted by veteran V.V. Ramanan, who has been on the job for 25 years. His wit in between the deadly questions on science, cricket, film, music, and sport enlivened the proceedings. Even elders among the audience cracked up every time he came up with a repartee to a wrong but funny answer by the participating students. "I never knew Buddha rode on a lamb," he said, when a student identified Vayu as Buddha!

The six schools that qualified included Sadvidya, National Public School (NPS) - A, Frank Anthony Public School (FAPS), Sri Aurobindo Memorial School, Army Public School, and National Public School - B. While FAPS was surging ahead in almost every round, the other schools caught up now and then. But it was FAPS all the way mostly.

The audience did give a big hand to Mukund Kaimal and Anirban Dattagupta from NPS, Indiranagar; Shrikant S. Rao, and Sarayu Pani, Army Public School; M.N. Chinmoy Venkatesh and Shobhit Khandelwal, Sri Aurobindo Memorial School; Rohit Nair and Anand Ramachandran, NPS, Indiranagar; and Namratha R. and Anusha M. from Sadvidya College. But the best was reserved for the winners — Abhishek Krishnan and Renuka Shenoy — who were duly ecstatic following their triumph.

Abhishek admittedly could have been as sharp as his junior, Renuka, who was surging ahead most of the time. In any case, both were thrilled that they would be travelling to Hyderabad soon. "That is my home turf," Abhishek said, careful not to sound overconfident. "We would like to celebrate. But it would be nice to do that after Hyderabad."

A thrilled Renuka said: "My family will be completely surprised. Friends, of course, will not spare me. The party has to happen."

Abhishek and Renuka prepared for the quiz like everybody else did, honing their GK. And they plan to do the same for the Hyderabad round. "It is just a week away. The preparation cannot be extraordinary. We will (just) brush up our GK," they said.

Both listen to lots of music and love to spend time with friends. They were visibly elated when Javagal Srinath presented the awards to them, which included cycles from Hero. "This is a proud moment for our school," they remarked.

The event, managed by Quizwalahs, was supported by Eveready, Britannia-Little Hearts, Hercules Cycles from TI, Titan Fastrack, Competition Success Review, NIIT, Sify i-way, Hansaplast, Liberty, Base Terminal from Panasonic, Camel, Coca-Cola, Prism Books, Ganjam Jewellers, Gangarams, Atria Hotel, Karnataka Travels, and Indo Nissin Foods.
