New Year messages
THIS YEAR, combine messages about Chennai's cultural heritage with Christmas and New Year wishes by sending out customised greeting cards. Manohar Devadoss is known for his pen and ink drawings of historic buildings. His work is painstakingly detailed more so because of his declining vision. His wife Mahema Devadoss designs the cards every year with a brief note describing the monument depicted. All proceeds from the sale of cards are donated to institutions such as Sankara Nethralaya Eye Hospital and the Spastic Society of Tamil Nadu.
Despite his acute tunnel vision, Manohar's drawings are sharp-edged, flawless creations, capturing the ornate beauty of Chennai's stately heritage buildings. This year's new cards depict the regal gallery on Pantheon Road and a pastoral scene reminiscent of Madurai of yore.
The other cards are repeats of his earlier sketches of Senate House, Victoria Hall and Ripon Building. Over the years these cards have become collectors' items.
The designer cards with matching envelopes are priced at Rs. 11 per card for batches of 2,000 and above, Rs. 12 per card for orders for 1,000 and more, Rs. 14 per card for batches of 500 and above and Rs. 15 per card for 10 to 500 cards.
So apart from generating money for charity, spread some awareness about Chennai's heritage and the need to preserve it, this season.
