Chords & Notes

Saravanapadam

Pranava Mantra, Rs. 50

A team of raw amateurs, relying firmly on their abilities, with generous help from friends and well-wishers have come up with this collection of devotionals. The result is surely not amazing, but then there is a lot of promise in their debut album. Understanding the trends in this highly competitive market, they have roped in singer Madhu Balakrishnan, who has done justice to the first two songs.

The rest of the seven songs are rendered by seven fresh, different voices, of which some of them seem to hold a lot of promise.

Despite the occasionally audible struggle to find the right word to gel with the tunes, M. K. Rathindran, the lyricist and Shaliesh the music director, have managed to create some soulful, solemn songs.

Like most of the albums of this genre this one also begins with an invocation, one dedicated to Lord Vinayaka and closing with a typically upbeat, fast number. Perhaps Rathindran and Shailesh could have attempted to break, what has now turned into a stale pattern.

`Vinyaka siddhi Vinayaka... ' by Madhu Balakrishnan, En Kankanda devam Muruga... ' by Jisha, `Oru poovaai njaan... ' by Udayan, deserves special mention.

Interestingly the inlay card carries the names and addresses of all those people who contributed their might in the production of this album.

A different way of saying thanks to those who threw in their lot to promote young musical talent.
