Climb this wall

Climbing on artificial walls at the Sree Kanteerava stadium is quite popular and a lot of young people are giving it a go

It takes grit and a spirit of adventure to do this

SPORTS CLIMBING is a relatively new activity in the world, yet it is becoming a very popular one in the country within a short period. Artificial climbing walls have become a good alternative to natural rock formations for climbing as the city enthusiasts of the sport find it difficult to go far and try their hands at rock climbing.

The city too has its own artificial wall at Sree Kanteerava Stadium, which many say is on par with the best around the world.

Artificial walls were built with synthetic materials to give the walls designs, shapes, and over-hangs that provide different angles of difficulty. Consequently, the route setters can design climbing routes of different grades of difficulty to test the climbers. The artificial walls have made it possible to organise a climbing competition in the heart of the city. Under the auspices of the General Thimmaya Academy of Adventure Sports, Bangalore witnessed two major climbing contests, a state championship, and a South India event. Both meets attracted good number of entries, which speaks for the growth of the sport over the last five years.

Karthik, H.C. Praveen, C.M. Archana, and Vatsala are some of the promising climbers who have represented the country in the Asian and other competitions. Christopher Rodricks, Ananth Desai,Vandana, Meryl, and Kavya Sharma are the new stars on the horizon in the sport. Karnataka has, in fact, bagged the overall title in national meets over the last three years. Organisations such as Manav, Mars, and Woody Adventurers Inc are in the forefront of providing quality sport and rock climbing training in the State.
