Forgettable fare

Arshad Warsi gets a break

Waisa Bhi Hota Hai - Part II (Hindi)

Cast: Arshad Warsi

Dir: Shashanka Ghosh

Muisc: Vishal Shekhar

AFTER THE mismatch of fashion and underworld in Kaizad Gustad's much-reviled Boom, Shashanka Ghosh attempts to marry advertisement and underworld. And despite all the gimmicks in the run-up to the release, including the name of the film - it is the second part of a film that has not had the first part! - it does not quite work.

The film has enough attraction in parts but they do not add up to much in terms of sustained viewing pleasure. It has a couple of eminently hummable numbers - Allah ke Bande and Sajna Tere Bina - which might just save the day in metropolises but otherwise the film falls short. It lives in silhouettes, it has its moments of novelty which induce smiles. But it does not go beyond being a brave, if ill conceived, new attempt. Lacking in star value to guarantee an initial at the box-office, Ghosh packs in a fine role for Arshad Warsi who started with such promise not long ago. A copywriter who gets his lines right but his life takes an unusual pattern - he ends up saving the life of the guy who had killed his brother!

Add to this inter-gang rivalry and Ghosh seems to live up to his claims of having plagiarised from other films to make this one. If occasionally he reminds you of Company or Satya, you know what Ghosh was watching before making this film and after he gave us Udham Singh's jokes on the idiot box. He, however, does not have the raw sensitivity of either. Nor does he quite pack in a punch. Waisa Bhi... is forgettable fare from a director who forgot his original self.
