Chords & Notes

Harivaraasanam Viswamohanam
Symphony Of Values,
Rs. 45.00

This one stands out amidst a whole lot of loud, noisy, racy, new devotionals. Unhurried and soothing, each of the songs and slokas is sure to grow on you. It is, as the producer T. Suresh Babu says, a realisation of a long cherished dream, one that he carried with him every time he climbed the way to the hilltop shrine. The proceeds from the sale of this album will go to improving the facilities of the pilgrims to this shrine. With profit not being the prime priority, the makers of this album have been to create something of their heart's choice. This makes all the difference. Apart from Vaikom D. Narayanan Namboodiri, the chief priest of Vaikom Temple, there are songs penned by T. Suresh Babu and popular krithis like `Sree Hariharasutha... ' by K.C. Kesava Pillai and `Harivaraasanam... .' By Kambakuddy Kolathu Iyer. It is the music, by Ananda, a disciple of Lalgudi Jayaraman that infuses life, new, pleasing shades to these lines. The often-heard `Harivaraasanam viswamohanam... ' is here rendered in Yadukulakhamboji. There is something so unusually beautiful about every bit of music used. The pick, however, is the song beginning `Vande Sabari... ' in Desh raag, which is sure to lift you. Prathap's sensitive rendering, supported by Vaikom T.V.Jayachandran, makes this album truly one to treasure.

Srilakam
Aditya Music, Rs. 45.00

Listen to the Sabarigirisha suprabhatham, Harivaraasanam and a few songs in the dulcet voice of the inimitable S.P.Balasubramaniam. The producers have roped in Sankaranarayanan Namboodiri, the former chief priest of Sabarimala Temple to write the lyrics, which is mostly in Sanskrit. The music, noted for its select use of orchestra, is by Sreeram and Raviechandanaa. That easy, flowing singing style of S.P.Balasubramaniam is evident, but he does slip in the pronunciation of a few words in the rendering of Harivaraasanam.

Gangayaar
HMV, Rs. 40.00

This is no cliché. Old is surely gold. At least, when it comes to music, especially devotionals. Another one in the classics revival series, this is the digitally recorded version of K.J.Jesudas's immortal hymns on the Lord of Sabarimala. All the ten songs, written by T.K.R.Bhadran and set to music by Jesudas and B.A.Chidambaranath, are still considered a touchstone to others in the genre. Songs like `Ganagayaar pirakkunnu... ,' `Ore oru lakshyam... ,' `Sankara nachalam... ' `Manassinullil... ,' `Pampayarin... ' etc are still fascinating, even after all these years and all these new songs. There are three bonus tracks too. Included in this album are `Sabarigireeswara... ,' (K.G.Sethunath-K.P.Udayabhanu), `Jeeva prapanchathin... ,' (Mankombu-M.K.Arjunan) and Kolathu Iyer's Harivaraasanam set to music by G. Devarajan for the film Swamy Ayyappan. If you have not got these songs in your collection grab this one.
