Metro cultural round-up

The 8th vardhanthi of the `Abhinava Battabana',`Brahmibhushana', `Panditaratna', `Daivagnasiromani' Sriman Rambhatla Lakshminarayana Sastry was celebrated by Aarsha Samithi, in the premises of Sadguru Sri Rama Dootha Mandiram recently.

`Sahitya Visarada' Brahmasri Appala Someswara Sarma presided over the meeting and released the book `Anargha Raghavam', an adaptation of its original, a play in Sanskrit by Bhatta Murari of the 9th century into Telugu by Rambhatla. Guests of honour, Vedula Subrahmanya Sastry and Maddulapalli Dattatreya Sastry including Sarma speaking on the occasion observed - `Rambhatla still remains a household name in families of highly learned circles all over Andhra, the north coastal region and Visakhapatnam in particular. Along with his other creative works, he also enriched the Telugu literature translating six works of Kalidasa and two Satakams of the more recent Aadibhatla. Even the eminent of the eminent among literary critics of the yore stated - Murareh Trutheeyah Panthah. Murari Padachinta Chedbhavabhuthestu Kaakadah; Murari Murareekrutya Bhavabhuthi Parityaja (Murari's was a novel diction, a vista of a genre in itself, the third in line. Be it creativity or choice of phraseology with masterly grip on the entire diapason of language, Murari excelled Bhavabhuthi in all aspects). The play Anargha Raghavam by Murari stands hailed a magnificent canvas of the consummate valour coupled with the splendour of Rama covering all episodes from the Yagasamrakshana till Pattabhishekam. Constituted in seven acts with emphasis on the roles of Guha, Jaambavantha (Vaali and Sugriva's minister), Maalyavantha (Ravana's minister), Sramana (Siddha Sabari) and Soorpanakha, it also commendably expiates the blots that incidentally surfaced, Kaikeyi becoming responsible for Ramavanavasam, Rama's Vali vadha and His imposition of Agnipravesa test on Sita and the likes.

Though an adaptation, Rambhatla made an excellent effort retaining the native fervour of each and every character (29 in all) including the design, tempo and gusto in the episodes individualy, a herculean effort indeed and a testimony for his ethereal brilliance and ardency'' they summarised.

Noted litterateur Aadibhatla Venkata Ramana was felicitated on the occasion. One of the founder member and the present convener of the Samithi, Ganti Narasimham coordianted the entire programme.
