Animation film on Mohanlal

Josey Thomas has made an animation film on actor Mohanlal.

FOR JOSEY Thomas, painting has been more than just a hobby. While employed as a chemist in the Middle East, Josey set out to experiment with art. He used it as a means to escape from loneliness.

His first attempt on canvas was an abstract piece. The theme: the barren desert and the scarcity of water. "I longed to be back home. So the painting invoked nostalgia."

Josey approached the owner of an art gallery in Jeddah. "I was paid around Rs. 20,000 for the abstract painting. I signed as `Krepesh' on the painting. Since then, I've used this as my pseudonym."

Josey continued to paint during his spare time, for it fetched "me good money". "Later, it became a serious pursuit. I began working with oil and acrylic on canvas. I then moved on to using sand and asphalt in my works of collage."

Recalls Josey, "While I was in college, I used to draw cartoons. A few of my works have been published by a leading Malayalam daily. I was into art right from my school days."

Josey has conducted in the Gulf. Last year, he exhibited his works in Thiruvananthapuram. "It was well appreciated," he says.

He has done a painting, titled `Feminine Moods', using a lock of hair.

Josey then tried his hand at animation. "I love animation and decided to make a film."

The subject of Josey's animation film is actor Mohanlal. "I've used songs from Mohanlal's films. The film is also based on a few scenes from some of his films," says the artist.

The four-minute animation film was done over four months. "I worked on the film every day after coming back from work."

The film was telecast on Doordarshan recently.
