Groovy beats

Students put their best foot forward in an inter-collegiate dance competition, gyrating to fast-moving beats

COLLEGE STUDENTS around the city let their hair down this past Saturday, thanks to "Konjam Move Konjam Groove", an inter-collegiate dance competition put together by RPG Cellular. Altogether 30 colleges participated. The Madras University's Centenary Hall, where it was held, was jam-packed, as students poured in to cheer their respective teams.

Chennai youngsters seem to be sold on the "Manmada Rasa" number, for every other team gyrated to its fast-moving beats. When the preliminary rounds had run their course, 20 teams were left in the fray. In the semi-finals that ensued, six teams - WCC, MCC, Stella Maris, SRM, Patrician and PKM - managed to hold their own.

The finals, between this "super six", witnessed a few Western medleys, apart from popular Tamil numbers. Despite stiff competition, the WCC girls showed themselves to be a cut above the rest. They grooved to a few Michael Jackson numbers. As winners, they bagged Rs. 20,000 as cash prize. Patrician College finished second (Rs. 7,000) and Stella Maris third (Rs. 3,000). Choreographer Allauddin Sridhar, Ramash from Raack Academy of Dance and Shiva from Radio Mirchi were the judges for the finals. The earlier rounds were judged by choreographers John Babu, Lawrence and Allaudin. SPB Charan, Yugendran and Venkat Prabu lent lustre to the event with their numbers.
