Caring for them
TO MARK World Disability Day (December 3), V-Excel Educational Trust, a Chennai-based NGO, organised an event for specially abled youngsters recently at the Park Sheraton. And today, V-Excel is launching a day-care centre for children and a forum for youth with special needs called Kiran.
It was a fun-filled evening with music, food and games, and provided an opportunity for youngsters to interact with their peers. Around 25 specially challenged youth from Navjyothi Trust, Rasa, Swabhodhini and SPASTN participated.
Vasudha Prakash, founder, V-Excel, felt that the needs of these people are often neglected. "However, these children are not self-conscious. They want to be accepted," said Gita Bhalla, principal, Kaleidoscope Learning Centre.
The chief guest, cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth, lauded the institution's efforts to help these children. The Annette Club (Youth division of Rotary Club) of Rotary Club of Madras Central Aadithya hoped to conduct such programmes annually. As for the parents of the participants, it was an emotional and joyous moment to see their wards so happy.
S. Murali Krishnan (percussionist) and Vedant (music therapist), friends of V-Excel, made the evening a memorable one. V-Excel also has a parents support group called Disha. Those interested can join the group on the third Saturday of every month at the school premises. For details contact 77, "Anugraha", Greenways Lane, R.A.Puram 24956373
