Swarnasamarpan, the annual jewellery design contest, showcased the innovative skills of students

THE DIMLY-lit Sagari hall at Hotel Chola Sheraton was glittering with innovative jewellery created by aspiring designers. They were the winning entries of Swarnasamarpan, the annual jewellery design contest, organised by the Gold Club of Chennai in association with World Gold Council. The contest was held this August and September.
Of the 2,500 entries from students and professionals, three winning pieces from each category were displayed. Chennai models showcased the jewellery at a fashion show where G. Gopi, T. Ganesh and Smitha Saranfenn's designs took centrestage. Among the winning designs were diamond-studded lightweight necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets, an innovative chain that resembled an ancient stringed instrument and a unique hair ornament. The student category saw participants from high school and college.
Kelvin Williams, president, Anglo Gold South Africa, who gave away the prizes, said that this was the first time he had seen such innovative entries by students. G. Krishnamoorthy, art director, AVM studio, Aparna Gujral and Pallavi Dudeja were among the judges.
