A maudlin soap rules

VIEWERSHIP patterns for Tamil serials suggest that the middle classes like watching serials about the middle classes. "Metti Oli" (Sun TV, 9 p.m.), the most popular soap in Tamil Nadu is about a lower middle class joint family. According to Thirumurugan, the director: "We have completed 420 episodes and the success of this serial lies in its storyline. I have tried to use all new faces, with whom the middle class viewers can identify. The characters have been inspired by people whom I have met." Thirumurugan said that Chetan, Gayathri, Viswa and others have made "Metti Oli" a huge success with their power-packed performances. He added that the serial that has a high TRP rating, has enough material for another 450 odd episodes!
