A fresh lease of life

WITH THE first phase of the 10-phase restoration of the historic Senate House completed and the building protected from the elements, the PWD, L&T-EEC and the University of Madras' restoration advisory committee are ready to start the next phase. But the university has a long way to go before it has the needed amount of Rs. 5 crores for the remaining phases. To create an awareness about Senate House, once the soul of the university and the finest symbol of the architectural style Madras gave India, the university plans to launch several steps that will lead to as many members of the public as possible contributing to the restoration of what is very much an icon symbolising the city. The first step is to mount an exhibition in Senate House about the landmark building.

Vice Chancellor S. P. Thyagarajan, the driving force behind the restoration project, would like to make this exhibition as comprehensive as possible. He is committed to completing the restoration work by the end of 2005 so that the 150th year celebrations of the university can commence here in 2006 and climax in 2007. He therefore seeks from the public old photographs of Senate House, particularly of the various occasions it was used for over the years. The pictures may be sent directly to the Vice Chancellor before December 15 and they will be returned after being copied.

Apart from convocations, Senate House was used for public addresses, music and dance recitals, theatre and other public occasions. The University Senate and the Syndicate used to meet there and the Vice-Chancellor had his offices there - something I would like to see happen again once the restoration is completed. Pictures of all such events and use when exhibited will, it is hoped, help this century-and-more-old landmark live again.
