Chords & Notes

Saranamayyappa

HMV, Rs. 40.00

They call it Evergreen Treasure, which it surely is. This album, sponsored by the Travancore Devaswom Board, is a collection of 12 of the most popular songs, written and composed by some of the best in the field, on the Lord of Sabarimala. Time tested songs like `Sabarigireeswara... ' (K.J.Jesudas), `Mandalamaasa... ' (P.Jayachandran), `Sreekovil... ' (Jaya Vijaya), `Sannidhanam... ,' (S. Janaki), `Usha Sandhyakal... ,' (M.S.Viswanathan), and `Ponnambala Gopura... ,' (K.P.Udayabhanu) will surely demand repeated hearing.

Shaastha Theertham

Tharangini-Crescendo,

Rs. 55.00

Every year the shelves are loaded with a whole lot of devotional albums, especially during this time of the year. And for most of the albums it is an unpredictable roller coaster ride. But if there is one sure bet it must be K.J.Jesudas. While the fastidious may browse the shelves before making a choice, for the ordinary music buff the first choice is Jesudas. The singer's offering this year is a mixed bag. Jesudas and son Vijay have rendered Kaithapram Damodaran Namboodiri's meaningful lines diligently. But all their efforts very often are drowned by the rather noisy, insensitive music provided by Salem M. Eshwar. Those who prefer those soft melodies may be a trifle disappointed. But for those who love the present trend of fast and loud tunes this may be the right choice.

Gaurisankaram

Ragasudha, Rs.50.00

Some of the songs from this forthcoming film is sure to hook you. Ones like `Kannnil kannil... ' sung by P.Jayachandran and K.S.Chitra and once again by Chitra alone, is surely the pick of the seven songs. `Thiriyeriyunnu... ' by K.J.Jesudas and the foot-tapping duet `Krishna Bolo... 'by Madhu Balakrishnan and Abitha are the other two songs that are sure to linger long. The lyrics are by Girish Puthencheri and music by M. Jayachandran.

Phir Wahi Sham

Jubilee Audios, Rs. 45.00

This is Umbayee's tribute to some of the immortals of Hindi film music. This gifted singer recreates the magic of K.L.Saigal, Talat Mehmood, Hemant Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor, Manna Dey, Mukesh, Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar through 12 gems from their vast treasure trove of songs.

Marakillaorikallum

HiTech Audios, Rs. 45.00

An endeavour by a few talented singers from Fort Kochi, this album strings together some of the golden hits from Malayalam films. Hamzu, Abu, Sadique and Majid relive evergreen hits like `Poojapushpame... ,' `Vasumathi... ,' Swargaputhri... ' etc. These singers prove that there is so much of talent still untapped.
