Gummuluri Vidya
Amazing flair for the instrument coupled with ardently achieved mastery in technique, exploiting its niceties to the hilt, marked the recent veena retical by Ayyagari Satyaprasad from Rajahmundry. He rendered a concert for Sangeetha Kalaasamithi in the premises of Sadguru Brahma Sri Ramadootha Mandiram at Madhuranagar. Kesanapalli Gnananandam, staffer of Aakashvani, lent excellent support on the mridangam. Striking high notes of grandeur from the start with `Siddhivinayakam' (Shanmukhapriya) adorned with raga and thrilling swara essay, Prasad went on playing `Sobhillu' (Jaganmohini) with a neat suffix of swara, `Naadaloludai' (Kalyanavasantham) and the Sriraga Pancharatna kriti, `Yendaromahanubhavulu' with elan. Then he extensively elaborated `Sarojadalanetri' (Sankarabharanam). The delineation of the raga including the neravu and swaram with acumen was a treat reflecting his in-depth knowledge as well. The thani with which the item was concluded was also an equally evocative exercise. A few compositions of Ramadas and Annamayya, besides a couple of western tunes, followed by a thilana of Balamurali in Brindavani marked the tail piece.

`Vijaya Vilaasamu' stands hailed a classic of the anicient period. Scripted by the reputed poet, Chamakuru Venkata Kavi in the first quarter of the 17th century, it still retains its popularity in literary circles for its excellent poetic values and most of the slokas contained in it being replete with Chamatkaaraalu and Yamakaalu (funny and satirical wit).
Sahridaya Sahithi recently organised a talk on it by the noted litterateur, M. Krishna Rao. Musically reciting some select excerpts from the kavyam, Rao explained in detail how the author achieved the translucent wit all through incorporating the paronomasia technique (playing and knitting pun with words in perfect syntax without going paratactic in the least at the same time).
Earlier at the meeting, the death of the renowned poet, Ismail, was condoled and a two-minute silence was observed in honour of his memory. Noted poetess Kovila spoke about Ismail quoting abundant examples from some of his works.

The sahithi president, L.R. Swamy who was in the chair, stressed the importance of the study of ancient literature. He elaborated how it helped improve one's own vocabulary and talent incorporating it judicially in scripting poetry, especially by amateurs. The interactive session later with the participation of poet-writers Ponnada Kumar, Pranale, Sahadeva Rao and Jagadeeswari marked a scintillating finale.
