Time to cheer
In harmony. PIc: K. Ananthan
SPRINTERS AND speed demons scorching the cinder tracks is a common sight at the Nehru Stadium. However, those who were at the stadium last week witnessed something unique - a Sports Meet for the `Special Children. The visually and hearing impaired, physically and mentally challenged children were all given the opportunity to display their abundant talents.
Jointly organised by the Lions Club of Coimbatore Ganapathy and the Cheran Region Christian Society for the Disabled Children, the two-day meet had games identical to what we often see in sports meets for the normal children.
"Mingling with these children gives you peace of mind," said R. Murugesan, District Chairman, Hearing and Speech Action and Work with the Deaf.
About 600 children from Coimbatore and its nearby schools took part in the meet. The little ones were split into four age-groups. The maximum response came from the mentally challenged section. "Earlier, not many wished to bring their children for such sports meets. Thanks to awareness campaigns, things have changed for the better," he adds.
