School tennis gets timely prop

The Hindu has stepped in to revive tennis in schools in the city. The second edition of this popular inter-school event began at the Nike-Bhupathi Tennis Village yesterday

A young sportsperson collects her well-deserved prize at last year's The Hindu Inter-School Tennis Tournament.

THE KARNATAKA State Lawn Tennis Association's ambitious blue print for developing the game in the State includes promotion of junior-level tournaments among schools.

Unfortunately, such an exercise was hindered by lack of sponsors, till The Hindu stepped into fill the void last year.

"We are grateful that this important segment has been addressed by The Hindu and the tournament offers the right platform for schools to build tennis teams," says C.S. Sunder Raju, Secretary of the KSLTA.

For the record, The Hindu was not the first to sponsor an inter-school championship. In the early 1990s, Trans-credit Inter-School Tournament, sponsored by Kiran Boal, was a popular one, and the Sports Promotion Team also conducted an event a few years ago. But such events soon ran out of steam. The Hindu, keeping in tune with its involvement in Young World initiatives has now ventured into junior tennis.

The second ediition of The Hindu inter-school championship which kicked off at the Nike-Bhupathi Tennis Village yesterday, and the event has proved to be a big draw with nearly 130 entries from 33 schools. The tournament this year will be conducted as an open event as not many schools had full fledged teams.

The matches are to be played on the clay courts at Nike-Bhupathi Tennis Village.

The finals of the tournament are scheduled for December 13.

Besides, the glittery trophies for the winners and runners-up, there would also be special prizes for outstanding players in boys and girls sections in the tournament and a special prize for best cheering team.
