INDIAN INSTITUTE for Production Management (IIPM), Kansbahal organised a two-day All India Conference in Oberoi Hotel this past week on Maintenance and Reliability. Sponsored by Indian Oil Corporation Limited, National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited and Larsen and Tubro Limited, the conference was aimed to share ideas on how to ensure high equipment productivity. M.P. Srivastava, Director IIPM highlighting the importance of the conference said: "It is an effort to create an awareness of modern maintenance practices particularly Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) in the Indian context." International expert, Peter Hills, Director, Mechanalysis emphasised upon the need of inviting CEO's of the companies to participate in such conferences but the efforts should start from the lowest level. "First clean your desk, oil your tools, then expect from others." He put forward the idea of delegates writing rough figures of current cost of maintenance in their respective companies and compare it when they meet again after putting into practice, the steps discussed during the conference.
J. Prasad, Regional Director, IIPM describing the conference as a marriage of minds delved upon the need of selling the idea of maintenance to the CEOs, who were concerned with the bottom lines only. "This seminar may be a flash in the pan but the idea of maintenance isn't. It definitely adds to the bottom line of the company."
