SHE HAS extraordinary looks. Fine. But she has an extraordinary grouse as well. "My music video characters are more well defined than my film characters," says Sharbani Mukherjee, whose bloodline traces its origin to the inimitable Samarth clan and whose acting line started with J.P. Dutta's "Border". That's all. Four films and a couple of popular music videos later, Sharbani has failed to draw adulation beyond her contours. "I accept that my career growth has indeed been slow but part of it is because of my own decisions. After `Border', I was offered films, where I had to play second leads; I preferred to work with smaller banners, who offered me substantial and different roles. So I did a bar dancer's role in `Ansh' and a normal college going girl in `Kaise Kahoon Ke Pyar Hai'. In between I did music videos, which turned out to be very popular, specially the one in which I play the synchronised swimmer. And now I am playing this small town girl, Vidya in `Aanch', who goes all out to save her husband."
She feels that she has scope to perform in a film led by Nana Patekar and Paresh Rawal. "Actually script is the real hero of `Aanch'. We all have well crafted roles and the film has got a shocking climax. I hope viewers like it."
Continuing with her search for `different', Sharbani is again working with Rajesh Kumar, the director of "Aanch" in a crossover film "A" and adman Bharat Dhabolkar's "God Only Knows". "`A' is the story of a girl's journey and her experiences. Kabir Bedi and his son Adam Bedi are cast opposite me. Bharat's film is based on his play `Last Tango in Heaven'. It is a costume comedy dealing with a politician's entry in the heaven and his machinations to capture Indra's throne. I am playing Maneka whom Indra, played by Dilip Prabhalvalkar (`Chupke Se'), uses to seduce the neta, Anjan Shrivastva. Jackie Shroff is also doing a cameo."
All said and done, the lady has an extraordinary hobby too. "I love to read faces." What she makes out of Nana? Taking a deep breath, Sharbani reveals, "The man may have a hard exterior but he has a heart of gold and deep inside he is a fun loving, naughty character."
Nana, are you listening?
