Traditional fabrics, new look
DESPITE THE invasion by western and fusion wear and new range of fabrics, certain traditional prints, weaves and materials still hold the old world charm for many fashion enthusiasts. Neelima Lal, who graduated from NIFT, Hyderabad, belongs to this category. Neelima specialises in the use of fabrics like Mangalagiri cottons, cotton silk and viscose to create beautiful pieces. Using traditional techniques like hand Kalamkari, block prints and Ikkat (tie-and-dye), in contemporary designs and bright colours, she gives a modern look to the fabric.
The designer is trained in dyeing, printing and weaving from Weaver's Service Centre here and has been working with economically backward weavers. Developing novel designs in Viscose-Ikkat is her forte.
Check out exquisitely designed dress materials and dupattas at an exhibition of traditional and exclusive handloom fabrics of Andhra Pradesh, "Aakarr", at Contemporary Arts `n' Crafts, Punjagutta from December 11 to 13 between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. For further details, contact Neelima on 27633637/ 98491-00703.
