Exercise can ensure quality of life, says Kannan Pugazhendhi, sports medicine consultant
|
FITNESS AND health are topics that guarantee interest in the look good, feel better world of pumping iron and working out. So when Dr. Kannan Pugazhendhi, sports medicine consultant spoke on "Health through fitness" at Step Ahead fitness centre in Thiruvanmiyur he had an interested audience, many of them clad in trainers and tracksuits as if they were ready to break into aerobic routines.
Greeting the fitness seekers with a hearty "Good evening, everybody!", Dr. Kannan proceeded to take the audience through the basic dos and don'ts of exercising, while emphasising the importance of staying fit. "Cholesterol collects in the coronary vessels no matter how little or how much you eat. It cannot be avoided but it can be slowed by exercise. Exercise can ensure quality of life," he said. Dr. Kannan is director of the Fitness Foundation Academy, Sports Medicine Centre, YMCA and has travelled with the Indian cricket and hockey teams as an injury management expert.
Dr. Kannan pointed out that there are no shortcuts to getting fit or losing weight. "You have to exercise a minimum of 30 minutes to get the benefit of working out." He peppered his talk with anecdotes about his experiences with the Indian cricket team, the hockey team and other celebrity sportspersons he has worked with. He demonstrated a few exercises using a Swiss ball, dumbbells, ropes and other apparatus, while telling people not to try the exercises without professional help or supervision. He added that exercise regimes have to be age-specific and oriented to the individual.
"There cannot be a one-size-fits-all exercise programme. It has to suit your needs and physical constitution." One thing every person working out needs to remember, he said, is to replace the water one loses while working out. "Sip water every 15 or 20 minutes. Thirst is a bad sign."
