The Youth Employment Summit being held in the city addresses the unemployment issue in a larger context

THE YOUTH Employment Summit (YES) currently being held in Hyderabad till December 18 is a platform where critical issues concerning the youth are being deliberated. Hosted by the Directorate of Youth Services, Government of AP and organised in association with the Education Development Center, Boston, USA, the forum at Hyderabad has over 600 high level representatives from government, multilateral and bilateral agencies, civil society, business, international donors and youth delegates from over 20 YES Country Networks from ASEAN & SEAMO and SAARC countries. These erudite leaders will discuss methods of developing an equitable and just market place that will ensure a sustainable growth of jobs for the youth.
Firdous Ali, a student feels that youth employment generation is imperative for the overall development of society. "India is teeming with a large number of unemployed youth who need direction. Therefore, the Hyderabad YES regional forum will prove beneficial to youngsters." With the aim of giving the students of Hyderabad a chance to put forth their views on issues of development YES and the Directorate of Youth Services conducted inter-college competitions - essay writing and elocution - at St. Francis College recently.
Some of the colleges that participated were Sardar Patel College, S.N. Vanitha Mahavidyala, Sarojini Naidu College, A.V. College, R.M. College of Social Work, Government Degree College, New Science College and the hosts St. Francis College. Issues on rural development and HIV/AIDS found many concerned youngsters voicing their opinion. The YES campaign was launched at the Alexandra Summit in 2002. YES' framework for action includes Employment Creation, Employability, Entrepreneurship, Equity, and Environmental Sustainability.
Hyderabad and its youth have responded with alacrity to the objective of youth employment that YES propagates. Over 150 students have volunteered to help in the smooth running of all operations. "It would be really nice if we could also be participating," feels Sidharth S. of Bhavan's College "because employability is for the youth and entrepreneurship comes from the youth." YES has definitely generated an awareness of the conditions of fellow youth across the globe. All eyes are now on the Forum to see how YES works.
