The new villain
HEROES ARE dime a dozen in the Tamil industry, as all aspiring youngsters want to be the next superstars! There is an acute shortage of villains on screen and Manoj K. Jayan fits the bill as a menacing bad man. His portrayal of Arasu in "Tirumalai" and the eccentric police officer in "Dhool" has made him popular in Tamil cinema. However, Manoj made his debut in the role of an epileptic teenager, Kuttan Thampuram in "Sargam" directed by Hariharan and this won him the Kerala State Award for Best Actor. After his marriage to Urvashi, he is settled in Chennai and has made it a point to do only meaningful cinema such as "Punaradhivasam" opposite Nandita Das. But Manoj is clear that he will not be typecast as the hamming villain and prefers to choose his role, as in "Jana" where he plays Ajit's elder brother without negative shades. Said Manoj: "I am doing an offbeat Tamil period film `Sringara' directed by Sarada Ramanathan. I am looking for variety as far as roles go."
