Elegant and rich
IT WAS a momentous occasion for the old members of Rasikapriya. A boy who grew in front of their eyes was giving a concert. Raman Mahadevan, the son of Mahadeva Iyer, former president of the sabha, has grown into an excellent soloist and accompanist in Carnatic violin. Settled in Seattle, U.S., Raman is an environment engineer. After a brief training stint under L Subramaniam, Raman now shows tremendous promise. His style is marked by shruti shudham and finesse, and is rich in emotion.
A stirring start with Begada varnam `Karunimpa... ' and a structured alapana of Chakravakam was followed by crisp swara passages. `Raghunayaka... ' in Hamsadhwani, was well supported by Balakrishna Kamath on the mridangam. This young artiste shows improvement with every performance. A noteworthy aspect with Raman is his ability to communicate with his audience and gauging their pulse. And the percussionist also revealed similar qualities, thereby enabling to bring out the best in them.
`Orajoopuju chethi nyayama... ' was presented with fervour. The swara passages in `Janani ninuvina... ' in Reethigowla by Subbaraya Shastry essayed the 'ni pa ni ni sa' phrase more than once. The choice of ragas was a bit on the heavier side.
`Manasayadulodune... ' in Malayamarutham was followed by `Telisirama... ' in Poornachandrika. The main krithi chosen for elaboration was `Kanthimathim... ,' a composition by Dikshithar in Hemavathi raga. The thani by Balakrishna Kamath and Balachandran on the ghatam took to mostly usual phrases.
