THE DICTIONARY will tell you that "levitate" means "to rise above the ground". And the shop which goes by this name does it in a figurative sense — it tries to "rise above" the mundane notions of fashion and art.
Meghna Khanna, who started Levitate last year, knows what "classy choice" really means. Having finished an MBA from Symbiosis, Meghna knew the tricks of the trade even before she set up the store. And sure enough, the store has gained popularity by just word of mouth. Each tiny thing in the store — from handicrafts, to clothing and jewellery — has been chosen by Meghna herself. Ask her why, and she says: "If I ask someone else to buy things for me, it will definitely not be what I want, and it will not be like a personal thing to me anymore."
The clothes here that she personally designs, along with a couple of friends, are mostly Indo-Western in style. But the fabrics used are mostly Indian. Kurtas in jute, silk, or khadi are priced Rs. 50 onwards. At the highest end, they could cost Rs. 1,000. There is also a good collection of ethnic shirts. A variety of skirts, such as wraparounds, panel skirts, and straight-fit long skirts, won't cost you more than Rs. 400.
Meghna has kept the prices reasonable, as she wants to cast her net wide, and not restrict herself to the "fashionable market". Some skirts, for instance, are specially designed for the generously endowed. Hand-painted T-shirts with clever slogans would appeal to the youth.
Jewellery, both ethnic and junk, is available in plenty. Personally selected by Meghna, there is something for every occasion. From shells to wood, leather, black metal, and silver, you will find here that unique piece you were looking for.
Levitate has a range of slippers and joothis from Rajasthan. They are not only exclusive, but are also reasonably priced. Most slippers are flat, and are either embroidered or have plain cloth. Accessories such as bags, belts, and stoles, in unique designs and colours, are irresistible. Most art pieces, such as lampshades, candles, diyas, photo frames, and wall hangings, decorate the store itself, so that the buyer has an idea of the ambience it would create. The store is interesting for it offers a mix of the vibrant and the sober.
