Introduction
I'M SURE you'll agree with me that cooking is an art as well as a science and so is teaching. And many a time a great chef may not be able to teach well and similarly someone who excels in teaching may make lousy food. Of course, one cannot generalise but I found this to be true in the case of many a chef and teacher who have been teaching in my Good Food Academy. However, here's a lady who excels in teaching and her food tastes great too. If the proof of the pudding is in the eating, then Sunita Lalvani's classes are definitely worth attending.
"My classes are easy-to-cook classes" Sunita explains "they are aimed at making the exotic easy and help even the most inexperienced to churn out mouth- watering Italian, Mexican, Lebanese, Thai, desserts, salads, starters, chocolates, ice creams and more."
Sunita moved from Mumbai to Chennai a few years ago. She learnt the art from her mother who is an excellent cook but she credits the setting up of the classes to "hubby dear who loves to eat". All chocolate lovers should join up the "Chocolate all the way" (Rs.400) session in which she teaches chocolate cake, black forest cake, choco-walnut brownies and marble pudding. Sunita's "Eggless dessert" classes (Rs. 450) is equally popular for its pina colada pudding, apple crumble and other desserts. Learn veg-starters and dips and sauces (Rs. 350), ice cream making (Rs. 450), chocolate making (Rs. 500), even a special class devoted to "rotis, parathas, puris and naans" (Rs. 350).
Also, learn spaghetti salsa, Mexican enchiladas and Punjabi food. Whatever you do, please do ask her to teach you her layered hummus dip, which I tasted and enjoyed tremendously.
Do remember that she teaches only vegetarian cooking, takes 12 to 15 students at a time between 1p.m. and 4.30 p.m. on Saturdays only. Having tasted some of her desserts, baked dishes and dips, the only suggestion I could make to her was, she should start catering so that we could order for her dishes at home. And then, of course, we would owe "hubby dear" a double thank you!
