A spiritual journey
TRIPUNITHURA JAYAPRAKASH is never content with the mundane. There is always an attempt to create something new. The Jayaprakash Sangeeta Parishat, which he established in 1988, still continues with the annual music festival on Uthram Tirunal, during the month of Kumbam, the birthday of Lord Poornathrayeesa. He has penned over 500 lyrics, the majority of them in Sanskrit, apart from bhajans and devotionals in Malayalam and Hindi. He also has the credit of having composed Buddha Charitham, in 31 Sanskrit slokas, titled `Light of Asia' and scripted a Natyakacheri, in Manipravalam, based on the Bible. Both these compositions were later choreographed and performed on stage.
Jayaprakash's foray into filmmaking began with two television documentaries, `Chakkulathamma' and `Ezharaponnana.' He also did the story, script and dialogues for two other tele-films, `Ammuvinte Puthuvalsaram,' and `Sivanandalahari,' directed by Mohan Pala. The very positive feedback he got for these films emboldened him into the making of what he claims to be the "first devotional musical video album on the Lord of Sabarimala.'
This 31-minute musical video is all about the annual pilgrimage to the hill shrine. In tight shots the whole experience, beginning with the `vritham' a devotee undertakes 41 days before the pilgrimage, right up to the Makarajyothi darsanam, has been captured visually. The script and lyrics is in a question-answer form. A father explains to his little daughter about the various rituals like `kettunira', significance of different places, like Kalaketty, Azhutha, Triveni etc. on their pilgrimage to Sabarimala.
Though there are some breathtaking visuals, the lyrics sometimes stumble, not gelling with the very traditional tune that has been used.
Produced by Sankar N. Menon and Sreevalsan for SLV Creations, the script, lyrics and direction is by Jayaprakash. He also plays the role of the father in the production. Baby Neethu plays the role of the daughter. Jayaprakash's Mahati Vision, Tripunithura, has provided the technical support.
This album is really worth its price.
