Highs and lows: 2003
SANJAY SURI: Actor
WHEN "JHANKAAR Beats" was released and I became a part of the India International Film Festival through "Pinjar" for the first time, it was the year's highest moment for me.
When I heard of the Mumbai bomb blast, my heart sank. That was 2003's lowest moment for me. I was in London then and my wife in Mumbai, near the site of the blast! Moreover, I realised that uncertainty has become the reality of life these days. Whosoever does it, it is the only innocent that suffer.
NIKI ANEJA WALIA: Actress
ON THE personal front, my marriage, and on the professional side, winning the Best Actress Award from Indian Television Academy for "Astitva... Ek Prem Kahani" are this year's good moments for me.
This year's lowest moment is nothing worth sharing.
SANGITA GHOSH: TV actress
THE HIGH moment for me this year was obviously the success of my role as Pammi in "Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand". My fan following really makes me feel on top of the world.
There were so many low points. There were some deaths in the family and that has left me really sad.
M.F. HUSAIN: Veteran painter
FOR ME there is no such high point but I am amazed at the way technology and communication have increased by leaps and bounds this last Century. The social, political, technological, scientific and other developments have forced me to paint 100 paintings represent each of these aspects. They will be completed in six months and then exhibited in any museum. "Baazichai atfal hai dunia mere aage, hota hai shab-o-roz tamasha mere aage". (This world is like a garden where children are playing before me. Everyday I witness their antics.) But I don't complain.
GURDEEP KOHLI: TV actress
THIS YEAR, my elder sister got married. All the relatives thronged our house and it was celebration time.
My lowest moment in 2003 was when my best friend left Mumbai to live abroad. I really feel that friends are for life and when you can't see your good friend often, you feel a vacuum in you.
PURAN CHAND and PIYARE LAL WADALI: Sufi singers
THE PEAK moment of this year was when we performed in several cities of Canada, where the response of the people to Sufiana Kalam was wonderful.
Within three days of returning to India, however, Pyare Lal fell seriously ill, and the doctors had practically given up on him. That was our worst experience of this year. During the three days when his life hung in the balance, Puran Chand too gave up food. Our greatest and worst moments thus occurred within the same month.
JYOTIRADITYA SCINDIA: Politician
I CAN name many high moments this year. To name one, a lot of developmental work has been going on in my constituency (Gwalior).
Let's not talk about the year's lowest moment. (After the debacle in the Assembly elections.)
PRAKASH JHA:
Film director
THE SUCCESS of my film "GangaaJal" is of course my greatest moment this year. I was so touched by people's appreciation.
Though it happened last year, the Gujarat riots still haunt me. However much you suffer, at no point can loss of human values be justified.
RAIMA SEN: Actress
THIS YEAR, my film "Chokher Bali" came. After the film people have started taking me as a serious actress.
I was disappointed that my first film with my sister Riya - "Bachelor" - got delayed this year.
ZILA KHAN: Hindustani vocalist
THE HIGHEST moments of my life this year came from the excitement of giving ticketed concerts in London. To know that people are paying to hear you, it's a big high!
I was disappointed that my second album could not be released, due to my frequent travels.
AMAN VERMA: Actor
MY HIGHEST moment this year was when I bought a second house at Bandra.
The lowest moment this year was that "Khul Ja Sim Sim" came to an end.
ANUJ SAWHNEY: Actor
WORKING WITH Pareshji (Rawal) this year was my highest moment. It has given me lots of confidence.
I can't name any low moment in 2003. "Nayee Padosan" was received well and I hope "Fun2ssh" will do well.
SHAAN: Singer/anchor
PERSONALLY, THE good moment for me is that I have become a `mama'. Professionally, the highest moment in 2003 was when I shared the stage in London for the first time with Asha Bhonsle.
The year has been quite good to me, and so I can't complain of any low moment.
LEILA SETH: Author of
"On Balance"
THE RELEASE of my autobiography, "On Balance" and my husband's 80th birthday were this year's high moments for me. These concerned both the personal and professional fronts, and the book covers both.
As for the low point, it was the war in Iraq.
JJ VALAYA: Fashion designer
IT WAS an evolutionary year for the fashion industry and we moved into the Valaya headquarters in Manesar.
As far as low moment is concerned I don't like to be hanging on to the past.
NAINA BALSAVAR:
Socialite and beautician
I LAUNCHED my beauty salon, Hairloom at the gate of Sainik Farms in Saket this year.
I had to remain bedridden for a month in October because of bronchitis.
AMEEN SAYANI: Veteran anchor
MY FIRST entry into an independent radio programme, that is Red FM is a high moment. It is helping me replenish my own stock of memories!
Discontinuation of my 43-year-old flagship programme, Colgate Cibaca Geet Mala this August from Vividh Bharti on account of a suddenly erupting service tax issue is definitely the lowest moment.
RAMA VAIDYANATHAN: Bharatanatyam dancer
DEFINITELY, THE high point was getting the Sanskriti Award.
I regret that throughout the year, I was so preoccupied with my dancing, travelling, rehearsing, performing, that I did not spend as much time with my family as I would have wished.
ANJANA BHARGAV: Fashion designer
THE HIGHEST moment in 2003 was when I came out with crushed outfits for my new label for women, Mind Your Own Business, (MYOB). My lowest moment was when I felt that my name hadn't been included in the list of participants for the India Fashion Week. Luckily it was so.
SOPHIA: Singer/MTV VJ
DECEMBER 2003 has been particularly good. Album is rocking, VJing is rocking, film offers are pouring in (as are a multitude of proposals) and I feel inner peace.
My lows?? February was bad, for I quit my recording company - Universal; besides I have had not enough time for relationships.
RINA DHAKA:
Fashion designer
THIS YEAR was as good as 2002. My work was appreciated at the Lakme India Fashion Week.
However, it was a torture of sorts going up and down to Mumbai, considering I have small kids.
SABYASACHI MUKHERJEE: Fashion designer
THE HIGH points were winning prize at the Mercedes Fashion Festival in Singapore and signing Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Black". Sometimes lots of work become a low point.
KIRAN SEGAL: Odissi dancer
THE LOW point of the year was receiving the Sangeet Natak Akademi award, too late! I think a dancer should be awarded when she is at her peak.
The highest point was also connected to the Akademi, when I danced at the Nehru Centre, Mumbai for the award festival to an exquisitely sensitive audience. It changed my perception of Mumbai.
