Vehicle of knowledge

IL&FS, in collaboration with IIT, Mumbai has recently launched K-Yan - - an integrated easy-to-use product with an ultra-large display ideal for group-edutainment.

K-YAN IS a futuristic knowledge vehicle (Yan in Sanskrit means medium). The box-type unit that K-Yan is, - combines the functions of a multimedia computer, large format flat television, DVD player, CD Writer, LCD projector, Internet, Video Conferencing, interactive games and Visual Audio system. The result is a completely integrated easy-to-use product with an ultra-large display ideal for classrooms and training classes.

Designed and developed by IL&FS in collaboration with IIT, Mumbai - K-Yan opens up the ability of schools, colleges, training centres and rural community centres to provide a new level of learning for students. It provides a platform for group learning, group viewing and group edutainment. The unit can be operated from a single combined remote control from TV channels to playing DVDs or operating the computer.

During the launch of the product recently, IL&FS-CEO, Alok Bhargava explained that K-Yan is essentially a full-feature high performance multimedia computer with Intel P4 processor, and built-in LAN and modem for networking and Internet.

"In addition, it has four USB ports for connecting external devices - scanner, printer, web camera and graphic tablet. The integrated device comes with a built-in full feature TV tuner, a high internal storage capacity with built-in 120 GB hard disk, integrated stereo speakers with output jack for external speakers and a wireless keyboard and remote control with mouse, for operating from a distance," he said. The idea behind K-Yan was to meet the urgent need for a low-cost new media product specially designed for group learning in schools and other learning communities.

Recognising the unsuitability and high cost of individual PC-based learning in the classroom environment, K-Yan has been conceived as a single, all media product for the whole class - a vehicle and a carrier of knowledge, information, ideas and experiences from all over the world.
