Top five
THE YEAR 2003 has been bullish for Bollywood with two blockbusters, six hits and at least eight films that will make marginal profits. Today, Bollywood is making films for the booming overseas market. This year's biggest hit is undoubtedly "Kal Ho Naa Ho" which has recovered its budget of Rs. 22 crores in two weeks! Just as the public and the trade almost wrote him off, Hrithik Roshan struck back with a bang in his home production "Koi Mil Gaya", the year's second biggest hit.
Next comes Amitabh Bachchan's weepy and sentimental "Baghban", which has collected more than "Koi Mil Gaya" overseas, especially in Asian countries.
Shah Rukh Khan's "Chalte Chalte" follows. It did fantastic business in the U.K. and the U.S. But the biggest surprise is Sooraj Bharjatya's "Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon" which features in the top five, thanks to a fantastic opening in the U.S. and India. "Andaaz", "Bhoot", "Hungama", "Gangajal" and "Qayamat" are also films that made money for their producers. Meanwhile, "LOC", releasing today, is one of the most eagerly awaited films and could make it to the top five within a fortnight.
