Anglo-Indians have a ball of a time
Winners all: The winners walking round the dance floor.
"Come on, pick up your partner and get on to the dance floor," called out the master of ceremonies. While the seniors jumped at his invitation, it took some time for the youth to shrug off their inhibitions and step on to the dance floor, well after the seniors had started jiving with their partners.
Thus began the Christmas Nite celebrations of Anglo-Indians at the Railway Institute. The `fun-loving community' did not mind expressing their love for one another in public. However, the younger generation looked more Indianised in their culture and behaviour. Some women wore Punjabi dress, while a few draped themselves in saris. Not all did forget their culture, they continued to greet each other with a kiss on the cheeks at the first meeting and most of them seemed adept at waltzing on the floor.
The band boys - lead guitarist - Keith Thomas, rhythm guitarist - Luke Warring, base guitarist - Michael Rodrigues and drummer - Kim Fairman - belted out some soulful songs, as the pairs danced their way through the night. They doubled up as vocalists and struck the right note beginning with Jingle Bells and switched over to romantic melodies.
The girls wore figure-hugging tights, midis, minis, maxis, shirts and jeans, while a majority of the boys wore suits.

After a few rounds of dances, the organisers called out to the gals to get onto the dance floor for the selection of Ms. Christmas Princess 2003. Once again, the girls hesitated to step onto the floor. But, when a few of them walked onto the floor, the others quickly followed and within no time about 30 girls gathered to vie for the top honour.
As the belles walked on the floor, the boys got into their act of whistling and booing at them.
Later, when it was the turn of boys for the `Prince Charming' contest, the girls followed suit.

The judges had a tough time in selecting the Ms. Christmas Princess 2003. They finally zeroed in on Veronica Norris, a teacher at the PEN School. The runner-up was Vanessa Norris, a student of Gayatri College. John Smith was adjudged `Prince Charming', while Craig Thomas was declared the runner-up.
The programme organised by the Visakhapatnam branch of the All-India Anglo-Indian Association started around 10.30 p.m. and continued till the wee hours of Friday. After all, the Yuletide Spirit calls for celebration.
