Rollicking rock show

The "Joy of Music" concert had the youth dancing passionately and screaming for more

WHAT STARTED off rather placidly turned rollicking midway through.
Organised as part of the annual project by the students of the Event Management Development Institute (EMDI) last week, the `Joy of Music' concert at the Hindustan College of Arts and Science had the city's youth swaying to popular rock and roll tunes, both old and new.
The "Unwind" band from Chennai set the ball rolling with heavy numbers. The soothing `Medicis' boys from Auroville stepped in soon after with some lighter scores.
During a survey in local colleges a week before the programme, EMDI discovered that the student community had not witnessed a rock and roll concert for close to eight years.
"That was one reason we decided to bring in a rock show to the city. We also wanted school and college students to sit together and enjoy an evening. That's how we decided on the theme "Joy of Music," says R.G. Nawin, Regional Head, EMDI, Coimbatore.
The youths did not disappoint him, enjoying the show every bit.
The crowd also got to see a fashion show, led by Miss Coimbatore, Anupama, and enticing dances. These were minor distractions, though. But, the audience preferred to drown themselves in rock music. The youngsters, most of them in their teens, went close to the stage and danced passionately to the tunes.
Enthused by this, the band from Chennai went a notch higher and had the students on their feet.
A few from the crowd agreed that this was the first time Coimbatoreans had been exposed to heavy music. They did not think much of the near-amorous behaviour of some people.
"It's not harmful. If not now, when can they enjoy? We should take it in the right spirit," said Rangarajan, a spectator.
"Safety is an important aspect in any event and I was happy to see the students religiously implementing whatever they had been taught in the class," remarked Anil Hegde, EMDI's Executive Director from Bangalore.
