The Visakha Ratna Kala Parishat (founded by P.A. Bhasakara Rao) and a committee of lovers of theatre, I.L. Prasad, V.G.K. Murthy, P.S. Naidu, G. Sumana, K. Jagga Rao and I.S. Rao, under the stewardship of the founder-director of the Lebenshilfe Institute for mentally retarded children, T. Saraswathi Devi, jointly organised a four-day cultural fete `Dr. Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao Samskrithika Smaarakotsavam' at Kalabharathi recently. The meetings which preceded the cultural shows on all days went far over stretched. Gratifyingly the audience and the artistes slated to perform stood the test of patience and gave their best. The cultural show started with a recital of Ghantasala's songs (solos and duets) from pictures in which the renowned star actor non-pareil, donned a variety of characters teamed with different heroines. Members of the teaching faculty of the Lebenshilfe Institute well rendered the songs with the support of a simple orchestra conducted by Saraswathi Devi who also comperered the programme. A thrilling dance recital by sprightly young school girl, K. Sivani and Krishna Ekapaatrabhinayam by Master Saagi Sangameswara Dixit from Gayopaakhyaanam and the noted poetic drama actor, P. Akkala Naidu from Sri Krishna Raayabaaram marked a grand finale of the inaugural day. #The next three days witnessed staging of two engaging short-plays each: 'Sadgathi', script and direction by M. Prasada Murthy, for Kalavani, Ubhayagodavari; 'Madhyataragati Mandahaasam' by the late Jandhyala and directed by Vaddadi Appa Rao for Dockyard Cultural Association (Fabrication wing); 'Lakshmivilasam' by Margasirsha and directed by P. Siva Prasad for K.V. Memorial Arts; 'Repatisatruvu' by Akella and directed by Kondavalasa Lakshmana Rao for Kalalahari; 'Kaalutunna Poolathota' by Pydipala and directed by M.D. Sahinsha for Rasavahini, Amalapuram, and 'Vamana Vriksham' by A. Bhaskara Chandra and directed by Dr.G. Ravi Krishna for Kalaradhana, Nandyala.

As part of the cultural menu during the month long Magasiramaasa Vaarshikotsavam of Sri Kanakamahalakshmi Devasthanam, a Kavisammelan was held in the premises of the temple under the auspices of Spandana, a noted literary body. The Devasthanam Committee Chairman, Tummala Raja Papayya, who presided, the chief guest, Kambhampati Hari Babu (former MLA,) and the honorary secretary of the Spandana, Moturi Sriramakrishna, spoke. Stating that the pen is more powerful than the bullet and the poets punch of animadversion is more piercing than the midsummer heat of the sun, they explained how the poets right from yore to Sri Sri of the more recent time ardently tried to create an awareness on the need for reform. Hence the present day writer-poets emulating them should try to tread the path establishing a niche of their own at the same time. The Kavithalu recited later by Koganti Vijayalakshmi, Ragathi Rama, Mangu Sivarama Prasad, Koritala Prabhakara Rao, Mooka Ratna Raju, Rambhatla N. Sarma, Rokkam Kaameswara Rao, Indu Ramana, Gudimetla Gopala Krishna, Muddamsetti Hanumantha Rao, D.V. Surya Rao, Bhaskar, Appala N. Sarma, Brahmam and Joga Rao turned out to be not only a poetic obeisance to the Devi but also an evocation of the subtle nuances of the ethical values of human life. Koganti, who compered the programme well, as well proved to be an adept officiant delightfully moderating the session.
